Chapter Six
Moira woke to the sound of two low male voices. Her eyelids fluttered open, but she closed them again against the light coming in through the window. Her head pounded so badly, it nearly drowned out the sound of Dain and Killian who were in deep discussion near the foot of her bed.
“I thought you didn’t want to find Cyric,” said Killian.
Through her barely slitted eyes, she saw Dain flick a glance at her. “I don’t, but this has to stop.”
The note of concern in his voice made something pleasant and warm bloom in the center of her chest. It almost completely chased away the pain of her head. That had been the worst attack since the one that had driven her to seek Dain out.
“You’re starting to care for her,” came Killian’s pleased voice.
Dain said nothing in response.
Feeling like she was eavesdropping, she allowed her eyelids to flutter open a bit. “The window,” she croaked. “The light.”
Heavy, masculine footsteps crossed the floor and Moira heard the rustling sound of the curtains being closed.
A large hand covered her forehead and the touch seemed to draw the pain from her skull. She opened her eyes to find Dain looking down at her with worry in his eyes. She tried to smile at him, but it was really more of a grimace.
“That was a bad one,” he murmured. “I’m relieved to see you awake. Did you see anything?”
Wincing, she pushed herself up a bit in the bed. She shook her head. “No,” she rasped, then cleared her throat. “There was just pain.”
Dain stood staring at her for a moment, and then he turned away and walked to the window, rubbing a hand over his face. “They have to stop,” he said almost to himself.
Killian brought her a glass of water that she drank gratefully. “I don’t even know what this has to do with you, Dain. Maybe nothing,” she said. She shook her head. “I would never request that you have a confrontation with your greatest enemy on my account.”
He turned to face her. “Why wouldn’t you ask this?”
She shrugged. “You and I have no real tie. It isn’t my place to ask something so large of you. This is my battle, not yours.”
Dain walked toward her slowly, his face seemed to smolder with emotion and unsaid things. He stopped beside her and laid his palm to her cheek. “You truly think we have no ties?”
She looked away. He was too damaged for her to hope for anything beyond a carnal relation. He’d said it himself in the corridor. It would not do to dissemble, not with such heavy, emotional issues. Better they kept their relationship as it was, kept it honest. It was physical and nothing more. It was no matter that she might pine for more than that in her heart.
“A few days ago in the corridor we were connected,” he said softly and then walked slowly out of the room and closed the door behind him.
She took another drink of water, her hand shaking just a little.
